Acne is probably one of the most distressing skin problems. It generally occurs during adolescence although older people can also be affected. Caused by an imbalance in the sebaceous secretions, a rigorous cleansing programme and plant-based treatments can be considerably improve matters...

Adolescent blues

Acne is one of the miseries of adolescence. Generally thought of as a benign skin problem, it can have long-term consequences. It manifest itself in blocking and inflammation of the sebaceous follicle with formation of blackheads, white-heads, inflamed papules and pustules, and small facial spots can become infected . Common treatments from your doctor include antibiotics and topical agents that encourage unblocking of the pilosebaceous units. Derivations of vitamin A are available as creams and lotions. For severe acne powerful retinoids and vitamin A can be taken orally. They are available on prescription only due to their side effects.

Treating acne

A skin which has acne is by definition an oily skin, so follow the same daily care programme as that recommended for oily skins. In addition, clean the skin thoroughly with a dermatological glycerine soap containing antibacterial agents. Skin suffering from acne is often irritated by over-drying from oily skin treatments. In this case it is preferable to use an emulsion-based day cream (oil in water) containing zinc gluconate and emollients. Other types of emulsion, unscented, containing zinc salts and allantoin have the advantage of being thick in texture with easy absorption into the skin.
