Are crash diets really such a bad idea?

Amongst health expects, crash diets are seen as a bad idea for most people as:

  1. They encourage loss of more lean tissue (muscle) than diets which produce a slower weight loss on a higher calorie level.

  2. They may be lacking in nutrients - both macro nutrients such as fat, protein or carbohydrate, and micro nutrients such as vitamins and minerals

  3. They don’t encourage sensible eating habits and this means that after the crash diet is over weight is easily regained. In time, this can turn into a ‘yo-yo’ dieting habit, which is demoralizing.
